Using a commercial flavouring essence may seem like a cop-out to purists, but by George it saves a lot of trouble! The range is immense, one manufacturer offering over 150 different flavours, including everything from liqueurs to rum to Scotch whisky to ........you name it and they've got it. The two best-known manufacturers are Noirot of France, Prestige of Sweden. The book lists many of the flavours available from these two companies, pointing out that their essences are available at most beer- and wine-making stores and also on-line from large distributors. They are particularly economical for people who have a ready supply of inexpensive vodka because, without this, the use of an essence with commercial vodka may not save you very much.
